BACKVINTAGE
Founded in 2003, BackVintage has built its reputation on delivering exceptional wines at unbeatable prices, without the overheads of traditional wineries. We source the finest fruit from Australia, New Zealand, and even France, working with industry legends Nick Bulleid MW and Mike Farmilo (former Senior Red Winemaker at Penfolds and winner of two Jimmy Watson trophies) to craft wines that reflect the best of each region and vintage.
At BackVintage, we offer top quality wines at a fraction of the price. Our focus is on delivering wines that not only taste great but offer real value for money. Whether you’re stocking up for a special occasion or simply looking for your next favourite bottle, you can trust that every wine has been rigorously assessed to meet our high standards. If it's not good enough for Nick, it's not good enough for you!
BackVintage is where quality meets affordability, where every bottle is hand-selected by experts who care as much about great wine as you do.
Drink a premium wine every time!
JULIAN TODD
Julian Todd, a fifth-generation South Australian, originally trained as a Chemical Engineer but found his true calling in wine. After joining SA Brewing in 1992, just after the company acquired iconic brands like Penfolds and Lindemans, Julian quickly caught the “wine bug.” Friday afternoon drinks at the office sealed the deal!
In 2003, Julian left the corporate world to follow his passion, founding BackVintage™, a unique wine company focused on delivering high-quality wines at great value. Partnering closely with Nick Bulleid MW, Australia’s 3rd Master of Wine, Julian combined his financial acumen and wine expertise to create a customer-centric business, consistently delivering top-quality wines for a fraction of the price.
A keen sailor, Julian spends his days off racing his boat, "Sweeney-Todd," on Sydney Harbour. With more than 21 successful years of BackVintage behind him, Julian’s passion for wine and commitment to quality continue to drive his success, with even more exciting ventures on the horizon.
NICK BULLEID MW
Nick Bulleid MW is one of Australia’s most respected wine experts, holding the prestigious title of Master of Wine—an honour shared by only 416 people worldwide and just 24 in Australia. Since the inception of BackVintage, Nick has played a vital role in independently reviewing and ensuring the quality of every wine they produce and sell.
With decades of experience, including roles in winemaking consultancy, wine judging, and teaching, Nick’s expertise is widely sought after. He’s a trusted industry voice, having taught wine evaluation at Charles Sturt University and co-authored Australian Winemaking, a key reference in the field.
Now living in Canberra, Nick tends his own small vineyard in the Southern Tablelands, all while continuing to guide winemakers and uphold his commitment to wine quality. His passion has earned him life membership with the Wine Press Club of New South Wales and a Fellowship with the Australian Society for Viticulture and Oenology.

BACKVINTAGE BLOCK 8 SHIRAZ TASTING
The 2021 BackVintage Block 8 Shiraz was crafted by legendary winemaker Mike Farmilo, who has been responsible for several vintages of the iconic Penfolds Grange. Handpicked at night to preserve freshness, the grapes were gently destemmed and fermented under temperature control. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine spent up to 18 months in French oak, imparting structure and complexity. On the palate, rich dark fruits and chocolate are complemented by fine tannins, while subtle oak notes of vanilla and mint elevate the nose. Perfect for pairing with red meat or char-grilled vegetables, this Shiraz can be enjoyed now or cellared beyond 2028 to develop further.
